I Am Not Sully

·

Let me start with the disclaimer that I play bass for the band iAmSULLY. If you think that means I will say nice things about the song “Just Like Groundhog Day,” due out for release in all the normal places 11/23/23, well—you don’t know Dick.

The bass line holds the song together, so much so that some of you will mistake it for rhythm guitar. Still, it’s not great, too simple. And redundant. Deliberately. But does that really make it any better? No. It doesn’t.

My biggest problem with the song though is the anti-bridge that insists it is not a bridge, which comes across as too meta for its own good. And why drag Bill Murray into this? Shameless name dropping of a celebrity who is in no way connected to the song or the short film that the song is featured in.

Post-punk, post-genre, and a post-it note reading why.

I didn’t review the other release, “Play for You,” because their is no bass in that song.
